How do I know if my stucco home has a water leak?
Common signs include staining or bubbling paint on interior walls, cracks in the stucco, soft or spongy areas, a musty smell, or visible moisture near windows and doors. Because water travels behind the wall, damage is often worse than it appears, and leaks can go on for years before showing inside the home. An accurate professional diagnosis is the essential first step.
Why does stucco leak if it is supposed to be waterproof?
Stucco is not actually waterproof. The water-resistant barrier is underneath the stucco and consists of building paper and flashing that also acts as a drainage plane. When that paper or flashing is installed incorrectly or becomes damaged, water can enter the wall cavity and the interior of the home.
